The Precipice

Craggy steep
Endless expanse
Of nothing
Extends farther than
The precipice–

Greater fear
And fury
Exists nowhere.

Suspended for
A moment,
Reverberating
Agelessly into
The black–

Step out
Pray for silence?
Turn back again,
Grasp the
Endless
Despair.

Weigh them in the end
See that they
Are not equal
This, what I knew, was
Black and empty
Always.
The other, unknown,
Pretended.

Greater fear
And fury
Exists nowhere:

The sable nothing
That rushes headlong

To greet us

The muted nothing
That preceded it.
